Ask HN: How do you interview senior front end engineers/architects?
5 by deepakkarki | 2 comments on Hacker News.
I'm curious. We're trying to hire for our startup and have no clue what sorts of questions to ask. An algorithm based interview doesn't make sense, nor does it seem appropriate to give senior engineers (8+ years exp) a take home project. We ideally want someone who is 1. Adept at good architectural and design patterns. 2. Understands library internals and performance nuances. 3. Can scale a complex codebase with software engineering practices (Test cases, CI-CD, migrations, etc) 4. Can mentor the team to better themselves. How do you test for all these? Note : None of us currently on the Frontend team have over 4 years of exp. The person coming in will be leading the team.

Wanted: Cofounder for YC S19. Robotic Tunnel Delivery of Groceries/food/packages
35 by tuberelay | 15 comments on Hacker News.
I want to use modern tunneling tech like horizontal directional drilling and pipe-jacking to build networks of tunnels under major cities to allow high speed "just in time" deliveries using small autonomous vehicles. Looking for someone with ability to move to SF in summer 2019 for YC (or another program). I am: 36, ex medical doctor, have a decent amount of seed capital. Interested in small lithium vehicles, construction and the environment. You: Happy to move to SF for YC (and probably even if YC app doesn't work out). Hardworking and ambitious and upbeat :). Any robotics or construction or civil engineering experience would be useful, but not essential. PR/public speaking/sales/communication abilities would be great too. Qualities matching those of the YC application would also be useful eg. cool projects you've worked on in the past. contact@tuberelay.com

Ask HN: Will anything replace the Web for simple hyperlinked text documents?
4 by snazz | 4 comments on Hacker News.
I really hate how everything on the Web has to be app-ified, for lack of a better word. I used to be able to just read content, see images, click links, and maybe type something into a form of some sort. Since then, it feels like the quality of my online interactions have dropped, as I find less content and more advertising, tracking and “apps”. Since so many important things use websites (like my bank), I know that it won’t be going away anytime soon. However, I feel like I’m not the only one who is frustrated by how hard it is to get at the content. Do you know of any complete replacements for the Web that focus on the basic hyperlinked text experience?

Ask HN: How you ever quit because the engineering culture is too messed up?
10 by throwaway98988 | 10 comments on Hacker News.
I work with nice people but my technical ideas are constantly shot down because either 1) "that's not how we do things there", 2) "there are more important things to worry about", or 3) "I'm not sure I like it". I realize different organizations need different people/experiences but I see some obvious errors in management infrastructure and I'm trying to be not-pushy as much as possible while fully realizing there are good reasons for everything. To my eyes, the things I'm proposing are simple and work almost everywhere else but they are still controversial, it seems. How much should you be swimming against the current before calling it quits because we can't change anything? It's a general question, thus why I haven't given concrete examples for my situation.

Working at most companies today as a software engineer requires you to follow certain methodologies (daily stand-ups, kanban boards, sprints, backlogs, the need for often non-technical managers, etc) How do these methodologies compare to successful community-run open source projects ? and more importantly, if they are different, why don’t proprietary / company projects follow the open source model methodology wise ? How are some successful open source projects run (in terms of development methodology) ? For example the Linux kernel, OpenBSD, or Bitcoin.

New ask Hacker News story: Getting better at pitching

Getting better at pitching
3 by zxed | 8 comments on Hacker News.
I speak really fast; not because I’m nervous, but when I slow down, I forget what I wanted to say next. I applied to W19 last year and after we found out that we were invited to meet and interview in person, I wanted to do something to be better prepared at the inperson pitch. I asked a few people if they would listen to me pitch or answer some basic questions like, what are you working on. I shared the points and content I wanted to cover beforehand. The feedback was consistent - “slow down, we didn’t understand half the stuff you said” So I put together a tool that would listen to me as I practiced and it would figure out what I said. I used it to enunciate better (when I didn’t it wouldn’t pick up what I said), get better at pacing my words, and help verbalize content around keywords. It’s basically a console app, but as I’m gearing up for to apply for S19 - I wanted to see if this would be useful to others.... I’ve slowly started converting it to a web app and have a bit more work to go before it’s usable by others.

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Life after corporate job

Ask HN: Life after corporate job
10 by throwawaymlc | 7 comments on Hacker News.
I’m a guy, late 30s, 20+ years of programming experience. Active developer in C++, C, Python, Java presently (also Perl, Javascript, PostScript, Clojure, PHP, Fortran, build systems, Linux). I’ve been in big corporate (investment bank) environments for 10+ years. Overall, it has been great, I learnt a lot about large-scale systems and governance, traveled the word, all that stuff. I have realized that I’m approaching the end of the road with this line of work, and I want to get back to actual hacking on something more manageable again. I want to be building up something of long-term value (to me) over time. I have had a few little side-projects carved out over the years where I can just work on one well-defined thing, like rewrite an old system with the same interfaces but 10x faster, and I did well with those projects. How can I start, or be involved in, something more rewarding? I did start an ecommerce based side-business a few years ago, I learnt a lot, but I think dealing with consumer-facing things, marketing, and customer service issues is not for me. http://bit.ly/2SJES4k http://bit.ly/2MVW1CP These are small companies I’m aware of that have an very niche problem that they are the best solution for, and license to bigger companies that deal with all the issues of building and supporting a product for consumers / end user. I do see problems in my day job that could be solved more efficiently, but not things that seem buildable by an individual or small team. Unfortunately, I’ve been in massive corporates for so long that the only ideas I get from my day-job are for various kinds of “enterprise software”. I would love to hear about anyone that has made this transition themselves. Perhaps you have an idea you can’t pursue yourself, but might suit me. Also, if anyone thinks they can benefit from my knowledge / experience from a corporate environment for their projects in anyway, let me know.
