New ask Hacker News story: “Ok Google” Only Giving Progressive Words

“Ok Google” Only Giving Progressive Words

I have noticed today that if you query Google Assistant (OK Google) "Give me a random word." or "Teach me a new word." the result is invariably a progressive word. Examples are in order of what it gave me, "Prejudice" "Anti-racism" "Equality" "Prejudice" "Bigotry" "Belonging" "Microaggression" "Oppression" and so on in the same vein. This is a very odd way to show support for the BLM movement. I used this feature to improve my lexicon, however this feature is now useless. It has a very simple and small (seems like <20 entries) diction. I have seen no mention of this feature change on the Google dev blog or Google Assistant product updates. Is this the same for everyone? Was this mentioned elsewhere?

I'm not sure how much higher I want to climb the corporate ladder, although my current position seems like a stepping stone for many, and it seems like the company thinks the role I'm in - that is, the role itself, not me specifically - is a temporary step. The role above me does seem like a destination for many. I also feel a bit stuck - a few of my peers have moved up, while I haven't, and I may not be suited for the next level, even if I want to move up at least 1 more? I'm not happy to admit how much that hurts my ego and maybe I'm disappointed/giving up because I don't want to face others around me saying "why are his now former peers moving up and not him?"

Ask HN: Rejected from FB, what was your experience like?

Two weeks ago I was rejected from FB. It was for a management position. I am very open to the fact that I am just not what they are looking for but I kind of had a poor experience. The initial interview was pretty much: 1) This is a little about me 2) Tell me about you and the rest was reading what felt like a checklist of questions. There wasn't really anything specific, just kind of generalizations like "Give me an example of how you dealt with situation X" I guess its fair but I was expecting a lot more back and forth or to be challenged with some scenario where I could demonstrate how I would resolve, etc.. I hate not being humble but I have been pretty successful at my current employer and over the years worked/mentored with a lot of different people/teams and seen a wide range of skillsets. Quite a few who I know are now at FB were not really who I would call cream of the crop (I am just giving context, I would never belittle another dev) Anyway, I read some people say it depends on the interviewer etc.. I dont want to blame the interviewer, I am just curious if this is a typical interview for first round?

Ask HN: Would you be interested in a Python to WebAssembly compiler?

Hi HN! I'm Syrus, from Wasmer (server-side WebAssembly runtime [1]). We are in the midst of prioritizing our next quarter and I thought it could be interesting to ask here if you would be interested in a Python to Wasm compiler. We already have a prototype working, but need a bit more time to perfection it. Here are some use cases of a Python-to-Wasm compiler: 1. Usage of python libraries in the browser easily 2. Creating universal binaries that work anywhere How would you use a Python to Wasm compiler? I'm eager to hear your thoughts. Thanks!! [1]: https://wasmer.io/
