Ask HN: Why do you use Rust, when D is available?

D supports Ownership and Borrowing, just like Rust. DMD, D's reference compiler, can compile itself in less than 5 seconds, thanks to a fast frontend and fast backend. D is easy to metaprogram through traits and templates. You can make your own JIT in D with dynamicCompile. I'd love to hear some reasons why so D and Rust can learn from each other.

Ask HN: Best ideas for a customer discovery process?

Hi all, I am kicking off a new customer discovery program with a set of our clients (in the B2B space) and was hoping to lean on the experience of any Dev, design or product people. The plan at the moment is to conduct; 1:1 Interviews, Observations of current processes (via screen share), Concierge Testing and Story Mapping sessions. Would love to get your thoughts on any techniques/types of sessions that have worked really well for you lately, particularly now being remote? Any insights or info would be hugely helpful. Hope everyone is keeping safe and well.

Ask HN: My wife might lose the ability to speak in 3 weeks – how to prepare?

My wife will be undergoing significant oral surgery in a few weeks and there is a SMALL chance she may lose the ability to speak. I'd like to prepare, just in case, to have technology to reproduce her voice from keyboard or other input. My ideal would be an open source "deepfake toolkit" that allows me to provide pre-recorded samples of her speech and then TTS in her voice. Unfortunately most articles and tools I'm finding are anti-deepfake. Any recommendations? Fallback would be recording her speaking "phonetic pangrams" and then using her pre-recorded phonemes to recreate speech that sounds like her. I feel like the deepfake toolkit is the way to go. Appreciate any recommendations... There must be open source tools for this??
