This is for the technically competent Linux users. Which distribution(s) do you run on your desktops/laptops/servers? Why did you choose them? What problems do you face with them and what changes would you like them do make?

Hello, I'm looking to leverage my software developer background in order to make school (higher education) more affordable. Are there any groups/projects already going on to help this cause? I'm not looking to be paid, but am looking for volunteer work.

Ask HN: Help me identify an Isaac Asimov story [ANSWERED]

I am trying to find a story (not sure if it's a short story or a novel) by Isaac Asimov that I recall reading many (many!) years ago that is relevant to the current Covid pandemic. It's a murder mystery set in a future where no one ever leaves their house. All human interactions are conducted via telepresence. The protagonist is an old-school detective who stirs up the social order by insisting on interviewing suspects face to face. If anyone recognizes this story please let me know. Thanks.

Ask HN: Cheap and Reliable API for Building a Bank?

Hi, I'm looking for some more information on what people think are the best banking setup APIs. I'm considering a few different options: 1. Stripe - I've used it a bit in the past. Easy to use but I'm a bit worried about costs, 2.9% is high. 2. SynapseFi - I'm curious if anyone has used this product/API? I couldn't find any pricing on their site either. 3. Any others people can recommend that I can check out. I'm looking for the cheapest API to quickly spin up a financial service (and hoping to avoid larger fees) and thought people here might have some suggestions. Thank you.

New ask Hacker News story: Why can Apple out CPU Intel?

Why can Apple out CPU Intel?
4 by raasdnil | 0 comments on Hacker News.
Seems Apple are moving to their own chips for many reasons, but commercial ones aside, I see reports of Apple chips operating at 25-30% better thermal efficiency than their Intel counterparts. My question is, why is it that Apple can achieve such massive jump in the heat/performance ratio? And why couldn't Intel? Is it just that Intel can not embrace ARM or is it an issue of backwards compatibility forced on Intel that makes their chips so inefficient in comparison? Seems like building a CPU is a very non trivial task and seems this current situation would be similar to Intel making it's own laptops.
