Ask HN: How do I find early startups in LA to get a job?
3 by soneca | 4 comments on Hacker News. A long shot, but won't hurt to ask I guess. I am moving to Los Angeles in a couple of months; my SO will start a Masters program there. I want to find a startup in a very early stage to work as a junior frontend developer. I am a frontend developer for 2 years now, after a late career change at 37 years old. I quit my last job in digital marketing to study software development full-time. After 8 months studying, on my own, I got a job at a fintech startup. > Here is my blog with more details about my decision to become a software developer and how I learned to code: https://ift.tt/2yVW9xx The stack I use professionally is mostly EmberJS. I am sure I can learn e.g. React very quickly to be productive even before I start the job. I am not currently capable of performing well on a new complex application from scratch without the guidance from a more experienced developer. But I assure that if I can join forces with a senior front-end developer, I can highly increase the throughput of the team and alleviate the senior developer from less complex tasks, saving her/his time for the tougher challenges. > Here is my LinkedIn https://ift.tt/2CcJLcP I receive consistently positive feedback about my communication skills, which I believe I can maintain in English, even it being my second language. > Here is a newsletter I started with written communication tips in English that can serve as evidence of this statement: https://ift.tt/2FUcgwJ I always had an entrepreneurial spirit that I believe suits well with early startups. I have a side-project that can serve as some evidence of getting things done, UX/UI and product skills. It is a SaaS web app for 1:1 meeting management, built in Rails API + Ember. > One on One Meeting: https://ift.tt/2XyLUsB I would love it if anyone could point me in the right direction, as I know no one in LA. Thanks!
Ask HN: Are documentaries becoming more destructive than informative?
4 by HoppedUpMenace | 0 comments on Hacker News. I won't name any but with regards to lets say the past 20 years or so (perhaps since 2002, wink wink), and by mere virtue of the genre, it seems like the public considers them as proven fact, especially if you push the emotional narrative to dark places that people could never typically envision and ever so slightly twist "facts" around though creative editing.
Ask HN: Does Amazon Hire Without BS?
12 by halfnibble | 16 comments on Hacker News. I'm starting to look at established companies (i.e. exit the startup world). Microsoft recently began adding "or equivalent experience" to the end of BS in Computer Science, or completely removing the mention of a CS degree altogether in their job postings. But all the jobs I've read so far on amazon.jobs seem to imply that a BS degree is required. Does anyone know if that is still the case? Is there any point in applying at Amazon if you don't have a BS degree? Any tips or tricks? (Besides signing up for the quickest online college degree program...) Thanks.
Ask HN: What problem does your business face that you’d pay to have solved?
6 by krrishd | 4 comments on Hacker News. Presumably something that you currently aren’t able to pay to have solved bc the solution isn’t there. For context, I’m scouting problems to solve for an IndieHackers-esque capstone project, my personal objective being to net at least $1k over a ~5 months (could be any kind of problem at all, scale-wise and industry-wise).
What personal cloud storage would you recommend?
17 by blkcoffee | 18 comments on Hacker News. I’ve been looking to try get away from Google cloud lately but it’s been hard to find an alternative. I’ve looked at services similar to Google cloud all the way to setting up OwnClouc on DigitslOcean but I’m still unsure. What do you use and recommend for personal cloud storage?
