I'm writing a book about the role of software developers in the global economy. One of the book's themes is that developers hold a strange kind of power: we get to make decisions in code that affect end-users but only other developers (and sometimes not even then) can really hold that code to account before it goes into production. Seemingly mundane decisions in code can have profound consequences. I'm gathering stories from people who've had to take decisions like this and especially where it was in a domain for which they had no experience. I'd love to hear from people on HN who have stories to share. I'm also interested in hearing from people who dispute that this is even a thing.
